Trump stumbles in trade war blues!

Donald Trump’s trade war is faltering following unease on Wall Street and the City of London that led to the massive fall in the bond markets, which forced the American president to “pause” his global tariff hikes last week for 90 days for all but China. Now Trump is turning the screws on his al lies to join in the new crusade against People’s China that faces an American tariff regime which, if not reversed, will choke off all American trade with the Asian giant. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Trump administration is seeking trade pledges from its allies aimed at economically isolating China, in return for lower import levies. But in Britain and in the other chancelleries of Europe there is mounting opposition to Trump’s attempt to force them to uselessly sacrifice their lucrative trade with China.

Birmingham bin workers reject new offer

Striking Birmingham bin workers have rejected the council’s “totally inadequate” offer. Hundreds of workers voted overwhelmingly to reject the deal, which still included substantial pay cuts for workers. As bin bags and rubbish pile up on the streets, Birmingham City Council still refuses to respond realistically to union demands. Their offer did not protect workers from proposed reduced staffing levels and pay cuts.

Trump’s 100 days

In America the symbolic significance of the first 100 days of a presidential term goes back to Franklin D Roosevelt’s first term in office in 1933. In those early days Roosevelt pushed through the New Deal economic plan and a tranche of relief programmes to help farmers and ease unemployment in a USA that had been brought to its knees by the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Although America never fully recovered until the war boom of the Second World War, Roosevelt’s reforms boosted the fortunes of his Democratic Party and ensured that he remained in the White House until his death in April 1945.
